Film Classes

Course Outline

Screenwriting 100 Introduction to writing for the screen. Includes writing in correct film-script format, creating image-based outlines for documentaries, short dramas and analyzing the basic components and structure of a film script.

Screenwriting 200 Focus on television and short-form drama. Examines the unique demands of television stories and scripts.

Screenwriting 300 Long-form dramas will be written, critiqued and fine-tuned for final projects.

Cinematography 100 Introduction to light and cameras. Includes the basics of lenses and 3-point lighting.

Cinematography 200 Lighting a set for film and video work. Evaluating different lighting setups for various locations.

Cinematography 300 The emphasis is on more advanced lighting techniques in the studio and with exteriors.

Sound 100 Film Sound Fundamentals. Covers sound requirement planning, setting up and operating specific sound equipment for location and studio shoots.

Editing 100/200/300 Introduction to Editing Theory and Applications. Creating and using standard time notations. Learning to use linear and non-linear systems.

Sound & Editing 200/300 Working with various microphones i.e. NAGRA, to optimize sound for drama and documentaries, and extensive use of AVID editing machines.

Production 100 Students will gain a full understanding of the Production Process, from Concept to Completion. Students will begin to develop skills as they pertain to Producing and Directing

Production 400 Students will Write, Produce and Pitch a Final Project. Selected students will direct a 10 minute Final Project. All Students will participate in the Production of Final Projects.

Television 100 Students will work in the Studio on single camera and multi-camera projects utilizing Actors from the Acting Program.

Television 300 Students will produce and direct increasingly complicated single and multi-camera Studio Projects. Students will understand basic Control Room techniques and language. Students will Produce and Direct a final 3 Camera Studio Project.

Directing / Assistant Directing 200 Working with crews and cast. The roles of director and assistant director.
Directing / Assistant Directing 300 This course on producing and directing drama examines structure of drama and the importance of communicating with crew and cast.

Directing / Assistant Directing 400 Learn the most effective industry techniques to get award-winning performances from all your actors.

Film History 100 An introduction to the international language of film and selected pioneers of world cinema.

Visual Storytelling 100/200/300 This introduction to the techniques of film and video encompasses how filmmakers use the medium and language of motion pictures to convey an image, outline characters and tell a meaningful story.

Documentary 200 Working in small groups, students will conceptualize a 5-minute documentary project using a digital video camera for production.

Make-Up 200 Students will learn basic Make-up skills for Film and Video productions.

Music Video 100/200 Students will produce increasingly complex Music Videos using local bands as source materials

Post Production 400 An in-depth look at post-production editing techniques, including effective use of sound and music.

Industry 400 A practical look at unions, guilds, resumes, deferrals and all those technical on-set details you need to survive in the "reel world".

The Production Office
Students will learn from an industry professional the inner workings of the Production Office.

The Production Company
Students will learn from an industry professional about the start up and running of their own Production Company.

Locations, Locations, Locations
Students will learn from an industry professional about everything to do with securing Locations, from Permits to Permission.

Special Effects Make-Up
Students will learn some of the secrets of Special Effects Make-up from an industry professional.
